Just in: Tinubu is ECOWAS new chairman
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He was named chairman on Sunday at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Bissau, capital of Guinea-Bissau.
Tinubu, after his emergence, said, “We will take democracy seriously; democracy is very tough but it is the best form of government.”
Member countries had earlier expressed gratitude and congratulations on the successful conduct of Nigeria’s election that led to the emergence of Tinubu as the President.
Immediate past Chairman of ECOWAS and President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, in his opening remarks commended Nigeria for the sustenance of peace and democracy in the West African region.
