JUST IN: Two drown, many injured in Third Mainland Bridge auto crash

Two passengers of a 20-seater commuter bus have drowned after they fell off the vehicle into the lagoon of the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, on Wednesday.

Many others were also injured in the incident that occurred on Eid-el-Fitr, a day Muslims are celebrating the end of Ramadan.
The driver of the bus with number plate FKJ 872 YA was said to be trying to avert plunging the vehicle into lagoon when some passengers fell off.
South-West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Ibrahim Farinloye, said a rescue team had commenced search-and-rescue operations on the spot of the accident

One Akinola Adeniyi, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, disclosed that the accident happened at around 11.30 am when the driver of the vehicle en route Iyana-Oworo to Island route list control.

According to Adeniyi, the accident was caused by excessive speeding on the part of the driver.

The incident caused a traffic jam on the Third Mainland Bridge towards the Island.
