Kamala Harris Slams Trump Over Maduro Capture, Says US Action Driven by Oil Interests

Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly criticised President Donald Trump over the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, arguing that the operation was motivated by oil interests rather than concerns about democracy, security or drug trafficking.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Harris said the decision does not make the United States safer, stronger or more affordable, describing the operation as unlawful and poorly judged, despite Maduro’s widely condemned record in office.

Harris warned that the move reflects a familiar pattern of US regime-change operations, often sold to the public as demonstrations of strength but which ultimately result in regional instability, prolonged conflict and higher costs for American families.

She said many Americans oppose the action and are increasingly frustrated by what she described as misinformation surrounding US foreign interventions. According to her, the operation has little to do with promoting democracy or combating narcotics, but instead reflects President Trump’s desire to assert dominance in the region while pursuing strategic oil interests.

The former vice president accused the administration of hypocrisy, claiming the president has undermined Venezuela’s recognised opposition while engaging with individuals linked to Maduro, even as the operation is presented as a moral necessity.

Harris further argued that the decision puts US troops at risk, costs billions of dollars, and destabilises Latin America, all without clear legal authority, an exit strategy, or tangible benefits for Americans at home.

She said the United States needs leadership focused on lowering the cost of living, upholding the rule of law, strengthening alliances, and prioritising the interests of the American people.

Her comments followed the capture of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, by US forces during a large-scale overnight military operation in Venezuela. Both have been indicted on drug trafficking charges in the Southern District of New York.
