Kano Emirate Tussle: Details of Sanusi’s meeting with security chiefs
Details have surfaced about a pivotal discussion between Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and top security officials.
The crisis in Kano on Saturday prompted separate meetings between the Police Commissioner, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kano, the Army Brigade Commander, and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) commander with both Sanusi and the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.
The Kano House of Assembly, controlled by the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), recently repealed the Kano Emirates Council law, a law originally enacted by ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to dethrone Sanusi.
On Thursday, Governor Yusuf approved this repeal and demanded that the affected Emirs vacate their palaces within 48 hours. While four Emirs complied, Ado Bayero returned to Kano and occupied the palace at Nassarawa under heavy military protection.
Governor Yusuf, angered by this move, ordered Bayero’s arrest. However, the police indicated they would adhere to a court order preventing the reinstatement of the Kano State government’s decision regarding Sanusi.

A source at the meeting between the security chiefs and Sanusi at the Gidan Rumfa Palace told Daily Trust that that Governor Yusuf permitted the security officials to meet Sanusi without his presence.
During this meeting, the security chiefs conveyed the court’s decision to halt his reinstatement.
“The Emir spoke for over an hour, expressing that the state government’s actions were a form of justice against past injustices he had faced,” the source recounted.
Sanusi also noted he had not seen the court order, referring to it as a “media court order” until he had actual sight of it.
On Friday, after receiving his reinstatement letter from Governor Yusuf at the Africa House, Kano Government House, Sanusi stated that his return was divinely ordained and that no human could alter God’s will.
“The Arabians used to say in everything that we are going to witness, there is a lesson that shows us that God is there. Whatever is happening to an individual is preordained by Allah and to those that are sensible enough, it’s a lesson,” Sanusi declared. He emphasized that God’s decisions are final and unchangeable, reinforcing that leadership is granted and taken away by divine will alone.
Sanusi concluded by criticizing the repealed law, suggesting that without this intervention, Kano might eventually see an excessive proliferation of Emirs, indicating that the government’s actions were a necessary corrective measure.
