Kano Urology Centre Faces Probe After Patient Dies from Alleged Surgical Negligence
The Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano is under investigation following allegations of medical negligence that reportedly led to the death of Aishatu Umar after a surgical procedure.
According to the deceased’s husband, Abubakar Muhammad, Umar fell seriously ill several months ago and underwent surgery at the facility in September 2025. He claimed that following the operation, she suffered severe abdominal pain, which persisted for four months despite repeated visits to the hospital.
“Each time she returned to the hospital, she was only given pain-relief medication without further investigation. They usually told her the pain was normal after surgery, but never recommended x-ray or scans,” Muhammad told reporters.

Subsequent tests and scans conducted at Muhammad Abdullahi Wade Specialist Hospital and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital allegedly revealed that a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her abdomen during the initial operation. Efforts were reportedly underway to perform corrective surgery, but Umar passed away before the procedure could be carried out.
Describing the incident as gross negligence, Muhammad urged the Kano State Government and relevant regulatory authorities to investigate and hold responsible parties accountable. “Incidents like this undermine public confidence in medical professionals and health institutions,” he said.
In response, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board ordered an immediate and thorough investigation. The Board’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, assured the public that the inquiry would be transparent, impartial, and professional, adding that appropriate actions would be taken in line with regulations should negligence be confirmed.
The Board expressed condolences to Umar’s family and emphasized that patient safety remains its highest priority, reaffirming a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of healthcare delivery across Kano State.
