Katsina Police Intercept Explosives, Arrest Suspects in Major Anti-Terror Operation

Operatives of the Katsina State Police Command have intercepted a Volkswagen Golf vehicle conveying a large cache of highly explosive materials at a security checkpoint in Koza, Daura Local Government Area, dealing a major blow to suspected criminal networks in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abubakar Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Katsina, saying the arrest followed an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation conducted on January 7.

According to him, the vehicle was driven by Jamilu Musa, 40, who was intercepted by officers during routine security checks.

“Upon immediate search of the vehicle, a total of 6,975 pieces of detonators were recovered, neatly concealed,” Aliyu said.

The police spokesman revealed that during interrogation, the suspect confessed that he received the explosives from one Najib, who is currently at large, while en route to Kongolam in Mai’adua Local Government Area from Kano State.

He added that further investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects—Ibrahim Murtala and Sulaiman Muhammad—in connection with the crime.

“During the operation, the police recovered 7,500 electric detonators and 30½ bags of gelatine explosives, weighing a total of 2,273.65 kilograms, from the suspects,” he stated.

DSP Aliyu noted that all the suspects have confessed to the offence and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

He explained that the operation was carried out in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on enhanced vigilance, intelligence gathering, and highway patrols across the country.

Aliyu reaffirmed that the Katsina State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Bello Shehu, remains committed to intensifying intelligence-led operations to safeguard lives and property in the state.
