Governor Abbah Yusuf and Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso
Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has cautioned Governor Abba Yusuf and his political associates against abandoning the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), warning that defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) would amount to betrayal and ultimately end in political failure.
Kwankwaso issued the warning amid growing reports that the Kano governor and some of his supporters have concluded plans to defect to the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Describing the move as a betrayal of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, the former governor urged his followers to remain loyal to the NNPP and draw lessons from past political realignments in the state.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, founded by Kwankwaso, has remained a dominant political force in Kano State politics for several years, shaping electoral outcomes and grassroots mobilisation.

Recalling events dating back to 1999, Kwankwaso said individuals who abandoned the movement at various times recorded only temporary gains before fading into political irrelevance.
“Some of you have decided to cross the line to go to the other side. If you know them, advise them that nobody in this country or elsewhere has ever succeeded with betrayal. It doesn’t work that way,” he warned in a video message that has since gone viral.
Kwankwaso encouraged NNPP members to reflect on the party’s history, stressing that political experience often comes at a high cost and that loyalty remains the foundation of lasting success.
According to him, allegiance to the movement guarantees political stability and continuity, while betrayal breeds uncertainty and failure.
He further urged party faithful to caution anyone contemplating defection that collective interest should always supersede personal ambition.
Governor Abba Yusuf, who was elected in 2023 on the platform of the NNPP, is reportedly weighing a defection to the APC as part of efforts to strengthen his chances of securing a second term in 2027.
