Kwara Mourns as Ilorin Chief Imam Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu Dies at 75
Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu, the revered Chief Imam of Ilorin and one of Kwara State’s most respected Islamic scholars, has passed away at the age of 75, triggering widespread mourning across the Muslim community and beyond.
The late cleric, who served as Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate for more than four decades, was celebrated for his deep Islamic scholarship, moral guidance and commitment to peaceful coexistence. His death was confirmed on Monday, with religious leaders, traditional rulers and residents describing the loss as a major blow to Islam in Ilorin and Nigeria at large.

During his lifetime, Sheikh Saliu played a central role in Islamic teachings, Ramadan tafsir sessions, Jumat sermons, and major religious ceremonies within the emirate. He was also known for promoting interfaith harmony, moderation and community development, earning him respect across religious and ethnic lines.
Following the announcement of his death, condolences poured in from clerics, community leaders and government officials, who praised his decades of service, humility and spiritual leadership. The Ilorin Emirate Council is expected to announce details of his burial rites in line with Islamic tradition, while consultations are anticipated on the succession process for the next Chief Imam.
Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu’s passing marks the end of an era in Ilorin’s religious history, leaving behind a legacy of faith, scholarship and unity that will continue to inspire generations.
