Prospective Manchester United buyer Sheikh Jassim apparently feels Kylian Mbappe ‘belongs at Manchester United’ and wants to bring him to the club if he gains control.
Mbappe has sent the footballing world into meltdown after telling Paris Saint-Germain he has no intention of triggering a one-year extension on his deal, which ends in 2024.
This has apparently left the Ligue 1 giants ‘furious’ but has naturally piqued the interest of some big names.
Real Madrid are one of the leading contenders, having lost long-term forward star Karim Benzema to Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. Chelsea are also apparently set to ‘register interest’, while Man Utd have been linked.
More weight has been added to the United links, in reference to their pending takeover. The club has been up for sale since last November, with Sheikh Jassim and INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe the leading contenders.
Both would, presumably, inject cash in order to create a side that would challenge for honours both in England and in Europe. Sheikh Jassim has some ambitious plans if he gains control of the club.
Football Insider reports he would ‘love to bring Mbappe to Man United if his takeover is successful’.
He has apparently told allies he believes the forward ‘belongs at’ the club and will therefore attempt to bring him on board. The report suggests he should command a fee in the region of £170million.
If there is to be an injection of cash by Sheikh Jassim in the event he does succeed in his takeover, that fee might well be in reach.
Recent reports from Qatar have suggested he has won the race to take the club over and that will be announced ‘soon’.
While the snare of Mbappe would be a massive statement, it’s one that would surely put United back on the pedestal they were on a few years ago.
Having finished third in the Premier League this season, the signing of one of world football’s best players, if no the best currently, would likely elevate them to fighting right at the top, rather than just in the top four.
