Labour shuts LASUTH, says only emergency services will be provided

Members of the Labour union enforcing the nationwide strike directive by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) over minimum wage have shut down the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, stating that only emergency services will be provided,

Speaking to journalists on Monday, June 3, a member of the union said: “We have been mandated by our national body that we should hold a congress and proceed on strike.

“The congress has already been held this morning, our members have overwhelmingly supported the idea of proceeding on strike. Naturally, we health workers don’t like going on strike unless it becomes a last resort because there are things involved but at this juncture, we have no other option but to follow our national body that we should proceed on strike.

“Having considered the points that have been raised, the members of the union here in LASUTH, have agreed that it is a just cause and we should proceed on this strike and there has been a high compliance rate. Because we are very sensitive people here, we have provided modalities to offer emergency services. All our emergency units have been exempted from participating in the strike.”

On Friday, May 31, organised labour announced that they would be commencing a nationwide indefinite strike due to the refusal of the Federal Government to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.
