The Corps Marshal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), CP Gbemisola Akinpelu (retd.), has restated the agency’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner metropolis, resplendent environment and return the state to normalcy in the aftermath of the #ENDSARS protests that resulted in unfortunate loss of lives and properties in the state.
In a statement made available to NewsTrends, she dropped the hint during a meeting with Divisional Heads at the Command Headquarters, Bolade Oshodi.
Her words: “There is urgent need for us to continue with our statutory duties of ensuring that every part of the state is free of environmental nuisances and infractions as Lagos remains the Centre of excellence.”
Akinpelu however expressed her displeasure over the destruction of public and private properties by the hoodlums who hijacked the peaceful protest, declaring that six of its operational vehicles were completely burnt by the hoodlums alongside other government properties, recording huge losses to the state government.
She gave an assurance that the destruction would not deter the agency from carrying out its operations, as the state government under the leadership of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu was doing everything possible to return the state to normalcy.
Akinpelu therefore sought for the support of all and the stakeholders, especially the traders, to carry out their trading activities within the designated trading areas, warning those trading on walkways and the pedestrian bridges to return to the designated market places.
She urged the pedestrians to make use of the footbridges to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and traffic gridlocks associated with crossing of the major highways, especially during peak hours.
The Corps Marshal also emphasised the need for some recalcitrant traders who have returned to those areas already cleared by the operatives to vacate those areas.
She gave the areas as Ikeja, Oyingbo, Oke-Odo, Agric Bus Stop, Ikorodu Round-About and the stretch of Victoria Island-Ikoyi, where there is zero tolerance to street trading and hawking.
