Lagos assembly speaker’s son assumes control of Agege LG as chairman resigns
Political dynamics in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State have shifted following the resignation of the council’s Chairman, Hon. Tunde Azeez, who stepped down due to health concerns.
Azeez’s departure has paved the way for Vice-Chairman Ganiyu Obasa—son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa—to officially take over as Chairman. The transition, however, has sparked renewed criticism from opposition parties, who allege that the succession was premeditated and orchestrated within the ranks of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasa had been performing the duties of Chairman since shortly after Azeez was sworn in on July 26, following the latter’s request for medical leave less than a month into his tenure. Opposition leaders argue that Obasa’s initial placement as Vice-Chairman was a strategic move to ensure a seamless takeover in the event of Azeez’s incapacitation.

During the July 12 local government elections, Obasa’s candidacy as the APC flag bearer faced significant resistance from stakeholders in Agege, leading to the nomination of Azeez as Chairman and Obasa as his running mate. Azeez’s prolonged absence during the campaign and subsequent medical leave fueled speculation about the true intent behind the ticket arrangement.
Confirming the resignation, Azeez’s media aide, Rotimi Sulaiman, emphasized that the decision was made solely on health grounds. “Hon. Tunde Azeez has been long sick and his decision to resign and devote his attention to his health rather than being weighed down by the responsibility of that office is the wise decision any sane person should take,” Sulaiman said.
He also praised Obasa’s leadership during Azeez’s absence, describing him as a “visionary young man” who has shown “uncommon capacity” in managing the council’s affairs.
As Obasa formally assumes office, political observers continue to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the transition, with opposition voices calling for greater transparency and accountability in local governance.
