Lagos chiefs enforce monarch’s price reduction order in community market
Traditional chiefs on Saturday stormed Agbalata Market in Badagry, Lagos, to enforce the directives of the traditional ruler (Akran) of Badagry for prices of foodstuffs and goods to be reduced.
On August 28, the traditional ruler of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, announced the dissolution of all market committees responsible for pricing at Agbalata International Market.
This decision was communicated during a meeting with market vendors held at the monarch’s palace.
Chief Michael Onu-Osekan, representing the Akran, stated that no committee should regulate the prices of goods sold by vendors.
He instructed town criers to gather traders across several locations within the local government to inform them of the new regulations.

Onu-Osekan stressed the importance of compliance with these directives and expressed concerns about some traders resisting payments for market services like waste and security fees.
He emphasized that the goal was to prevent undue financial burdens on the community and ensure fair pricing.
Chief Anthony Oloyede, Efiyentan of Badagry Kingdom, supported the enforcement, noting that some traders had been neglecting their regular market fees, including those for maintaining cleanliness.
He urged traders to follow the new pricing guidelines and meet their financial obligations.
Mr. Tunde Hundeyin of the Coconut Sellers Association welcomed the chiefs’ intervention but also called for government action to reduce fuel prices, which he cited as a major factor in rising food costs.
Chief Solomon Alabi, Otun Baba Oja of Agbalata Market, confirmed that traders would comply with the new directives and expressed appreciation for the chiefs’ efforts in clarifying the monarch’s instructions.
