Lagos to shut Third Mainland Bridge for two Sundays
Lagos State Government says it will shut the Third Mainland Bridge for two consecutive Sundays to repair the failed sections of the busy highway.
Motorists and commuters recently cried out to the government to prevent loss of lives on the bridge due to several expanding potholes on the road.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola, announced the plans to close the bridge for repairs on Thursday, adding that the work would take place on Sunday 17 and Sunday 24, September, 2023, between 7am and 7pm.
He said the work would be done by the state Public Works Corporation, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works.
“The proposed works will be strictly executed in two phases with phase one focusing on only the most critical sections on the Iyana Oworonshoki inward Adeniji Adele/Lagos Island,” Toriola said.
He explained that the palliative work was scheduled for Sundays to minimise inconveniences to motorists plying the route.
The state government also released a travel advisory to ensure seamless movement of traffic.
Toriola advised motorists to ply the alternative routes made available during the rehabilitation works.
He said the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Alapere/Ogudu axis inwards Lagos Island traffic would be diverted towards Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway to link Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue to access Eko Bridge and Lagos Island.
Motorists from Lagos Mainland going through Herbert Macaulay Road (Adekunle axis) inwards Lagos Island via Third Mainland Bridge would be diverted towards Muritala Mohammed Way to make use of Carter Bridge to link Lagos Island, the PS stated.
