Lagos Tutor Generals Without Muslims Unacceptable — MURIC
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the absence of Muslims among the six tutor generals in Lagos State, describing it as clear marginalisation and religious monopoly.
In a statement issued yesterday, Thursday, September 25, 2025, the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, said Lagos cannot continue to preach religious tolerance while practicing exclusion.
“Sequel to the clarification that there are four practicing Muslims among the nine permanent secretaries appointed two days ago, our attention has turned to another issue of monopoly cum marginalisation in the same Lagos State with Muslims at the receiving end,” Akintola declared.
According to him, the deliberate concentration of all six tutor general positions in the hands of Christians is unjust and does not reflect the cosmopolitan nature of Lagos.

“Our position is that there should be at least three Muslims among the six tutor generals in the six educational districts of Lagos State. We believe in equal rights. Sharing is loving. We reject monopoly and marginalisation. We have more than enough eminently qualified Muslims for those positions,” he stressed.
MURIC accused the Lagos State government of employing bureaucratic gimmicks to deny Muslims leadership roles in the civil service. The group alleged that qualified Muslims are often delayed until retirement or denied promotions to grade level 17, the highest civil service cadre, to block them from heading strategic positions.
“This wicked practice has to stop,” Akintola warned, adding that Muslims also voted massively for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and therefore deserve their fair share of political dividends.
Quoting a Yoruba proverb, he said: “Ajoje o dun benikan o ni — we can only be happy together if we are all comfortable.”
MURIC insisted that Lagos must practice the equity it preaches, or risk dividing its people along religious lines.
“Only fair sharing can promote peaceful coexistence. A cosmopolitan city like Lagos should not concentrate appointments in the coffers of one group while marginalising the other,” Akintola said.
The group, therefore, demanded immediate correction of the imbalance, calling for at least three Muslim tutor generals out of the six across the state’s educational districts.
