Lamborghini to roll out two new V12-powered models this year

Lamborghini says it will unveil two new models powered by its iconic V12 engine this year, as it hopes to continue its growth after recording its second-best year of annual sales in 2020.

The V12-powered models are expected to be Aventador successor, which motor1.com describes as a hugely successful model for about a decade that it has been around.

The regular Aventador boasts a 6.5 litre V12 engine that produces 700PS (690bhp/515kW).

The premium automaker says it sold 7,430 cars worldwide last year, despite the coronavirus pandemic causing disruption to both its production and sales networks.

Autocar reports that although the sale report shows a drop from 8,205 sales recorded in 2019, it still represented the second highest sales in Lamborghini’s history.

It also notes that Lamborghini is on course to grow sales again in 2021 as it begins deliveries of the hardcore Huracan Super Trofeo Omologato this year.

The auto giant confirms that the machine will be followed by “two further new products, based on the iconic V12”.

Although Lamborghini has not given details of the coming two V12 products, its boss, Stephan Winkelmann, in an interview with Autocar, says that one of the machines will feature the electrified supercapacitor system featured on the Sian FKP 37 hypercar.

Autocar feels that model is likely to be another limited-run special.

Meanwhile, Lamborghini says its strong 2020 helped it to achieve its highest ever annual profitability, and as it recorded a turnover of €1.61 billion (£1.38 billion).

The amount is also the second-best in the company history, which was 11 per cent down when compared with the record-setting 2019 sales.

The firm’s success was said to have come despite having to shut down production for 70 days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and dealer closures in various countries due to national lockdowns.

Lamborghini is expecting to recover from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic this year, with deliveries in the first two months of the year ahead of the same, pre-pandemic, period in 2019, and the firm having already secured orders to cover nine months of production.

Winkelmann says the “incredible results” showed that “we are very resilient to crisis.”

The USA remained Lamborghini’s top market, with 2,224 cars sold last year.

The US Lamborghini sales were ahead of Germany (607), China, Hong Kong and Macau (604), and Japan (600).

The firm sold 517 cars in the UK, making it the firm’s fifth largest market.

The firm expects China to become its second biggest market this year.

The addition of the Urus in 2017 as a third model line alongside the V12 Aventador and V8 Huracan has been key to Lamborghini’s growth, with the SUV now accounting for around a half of its sales.
