LASUMA gives Lagos varsity students scholarships, celebrates leaders
The scholarship awards were presented during the Lagos State University Muslim Alumni (LASUMA) Annual General Meeting and Awards held in Ikeja, Lagos, on Sunday December 8, 2024.
LASUMA said in a statement obtained on Tuesday that the scholarships were sponsored by Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule, the senator representing Lagos West senatorial district, and the Executive Chairman, Ojo Local Government Area, Hon. Rasulu Idowu.
The event also highlighted LASUMA’s ongoing efforts to support charitable causes and community development, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to fostering a legacy of excellence and service.
Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, who was the keynote speaker at the event along with the guest lecturers, Prof. Jameelah Yakub, Head of Economics Department at LASU, and Ustaz Muslihu Afisi, a renowned leadership expert and scholar, spoke on sustainable alternative solutions to the socio-economic and leadership challenges facing Nigerian tertiary institutions, current and past leaders and the entire followers.

In his keynote address, LASUMA President, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adeyemi Anjorin, and immediate past Head of Microbiology Department at the Lagos State University, emphasized the importance of alumni collaboration in driving impactful initiatives.
He explained that although the current executive council was just six (6) months in office, it had improved the membership drive geometrically and established an online database for registration and improved annual dues payments.
Anjorin gave others achievements of the exco as creating different committees for all members to serve including Advisory Council for passionate senior members; initiating scholarships awards for indigent brilliant students and special candidates; move to partner with the LASU Muslim Community in expanding the university central mosque and students transit lodge; provision of souvenirs for all members; monthly/ quarterly educational seminar; plan for the annual Ramadan iftar programme and AGM as well as workshops and professional training for all members among others.
He urged all LASUMA members to ensure their profiles are captured on the newly launched LASUMA website – www.lasuma.org.ng.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of awards of excellence to alumni and notable leaders for their exceptional contributions to LASUMA and beyond, including Senator Idiat Adebule, Hon. Rasulu Idowu, Prof. Bilkis Lafiaji-Okunneye, immediate Vice Chancellor of Fountain University, Osogbo, Prof. Amidu Sanni; current Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and a host of others.
One participant remarked, “Today’s event was truly inspiring—seeing alumni from different generations come together with such passion and unity is a testament to the strength of the LASUMA community.”
The LASUMA 2024 AGM and Awards ceremony was made possible by the contributions of its members and supporters.
