Late Fernandez Equaliser Earns Chelsea Point at Manchester City
Enzo Fernandez struck a dramatic late equaliser as Chelsea battled to a deserved 1–1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, denying the champions maximum points and handing Arsenal a six-point advantage at the top of the Premier League table.
Chelsea, playing under caretaker manager Calum McFarlane following the departure of Enzo Maresca, produced a resilient performance against a City side firmly in the title hunt. The Blues showed composure and intensity throughout, refusing to buckle even after falling behind in the first half.
City had looked set for victory after Tijjani Reijnders fired the hosts ahead shortly before halftime, capitalising on a loose ball at the edge of the area and beating goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen at his near post.
The home side had earlier threatened through Erling Haaland, whose deflected effort forced a sharp save before he later struck the post, but missed chances would ultimately prove costly.
Chelsea responded strongly after the break, with Pedro Neto spurning a clear opportunity before sustained pressure finally paid off. In the closing stages, Fernandez reacted quickest at the far post to convert a low cross, bundling the ball home after two earlier attempts were blocked.

The equaliser silenced the Etihad crowd and halted Pep Guardiola’s bid for a ninth consecutive home league victory. It also marked Fernandez’s seventh goal of the season, making him Chelsea’s joint top scorer.
The result compounds Manchester City’s recent frustrations, following a midweek draw at Sunderland, and leaves them trailing league leaders Arsenal by six points. Despite the return of midfield lynchpin Rodri from injury, Guardiola’s side failed to fully capitalise on their dominance.
City’s concerns were compounded late on when defender Josko Gvardiol limped off with a second-half injury.
For Chelsea, the point was a morale-boosting outcome during a turbulent period. Missing several key players, including Robert Sanchez, Wesley Fofana, and Moises Caicedo, the Blues impressed with their organisation, pressing, and collective resolve.
McFarlane, overseeing his first senior men’s match, earned praise for guiding Chelsea through a demanding fixture against one of world football’s most decorated managers.
The draw leaves Chelsea fifth in the Premier League, just three points off the top four, with continued involvement in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League keeping their season firmly alive amid speculation over a permanent managerial appointment.
