Lawal: Tinubu, Buhari informed U.S about alleged Christian killings under Jonathan
ABUJA — Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu, former President Muhammadu Buhari, and other leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were among those who first informed the United States government about alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria during the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Lawal said the development was part of an APC delegation’s lobbying effort in Washington at the time.
“Trump might be right, might not be right,” Lawal said, referring to recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump on alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria.
“But don’t forget, there was a delegation that first went to the United States to tell Obama then that Christians were being slaughtered in Nigeria. It included this man — the president (Tinubu). Buhari was there. Amaechi was there. I saw the picture. They went to lobby the Americans that the Goodluck government was carrying out genocide in Nigeria.”

The former SGF described it as ironic that those who once raised international alarm about insecurity now downplay similar concerns under their own government.
“They go there themselves and say it does happen. They come back and when we say it happens, they say no, it doesn’t happen anymore because we are in government,” he said.
Lawal, a vocal critic of the current administration, urged the government to prioritise security of lives and property over political debates.
“Forget about whether there’s genocide or not in Nigeria. The issue is security — guarantee our lives and property. That’s all we want from government,” he said.
He maintained that Nigerians are weary of blame games and expect tangible action to address worsening insecurity across the country.
