LAWMA driver flees after detached truck tyres kill official

A 61-year-old man, Olalekan Ogunmakin, has lost his life after tyres that pulled out from a moving truck crushed him to death in the Alaka area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Thursday that Ogunmakin, attached to the office of the Lagos Waste Management Authority in Ijora, was heading to a location in the state when the tyres from the truck rammed into him on Monday, May 27.

Our correspondent learnt that the impact of the collision caused Ogunmakin to sustain varying degrees of injury and was seen lying motionless on the ground.

In a bid to rescue him, people who were at the scene of the accident rushed towards his direction and rushed him to a hospital.

A source, who does not want his name mentioned for fear of victimisation, said the driver of the truck did not wait to ascertain Ogunmakin’s state, adding that when the LAWMA official was rushed to the hospital, a doctor on duty confirmed him dead.

The source said, “The man (Ogunmakin) was attached to the LAWMA office. He was going somewhere when the tyres from the truck that was at top speed ran into him.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, when contacted, confirmed that following the accident, Ogunmakin was rushed to the Randle Hospital in the Surulere area of the state.

He explained that the doctor on duty confirmed him dead, adding that efforts were on to arrest the fleeing driver of the truck.

Hundeyin said, “The incident happened on May 27, 2024, around 10.24 pm, at Alaka, inward the National Stadium. It involved an unknown truck driven by a driver and our investigation revealed that two tyres of an unknown truck pulled out suddenly in motion and hit a 61-year-old man, Olalekan Ogunmakin, attached to the LAWMA office, Ijora.

“The man sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Randle Hospital, Surulere, Lagos, for treatment. He died and this was confirmed by the doctors on duty. The corpse was deposited at the same hospital for preservation and an investigation is ongoing for the arrest of the truck driver.”
