Lawyer’s Viral DNA Test Advice Divides Nigerians Online

Lawyer’s Viral DNA Test Advice Divides Nigerians Online

A Nigerian lawyer has sparked widespread debate on social media after her advice to married women whose husbands insist on conducting DNA tests on their children went viral.

The legal practitioner, identified as Barrister Stella Justice Nnennaya, advised women who are confident of their children’s paternity to allow the DNA test and, if the result confirms the husband as the biological father, consider legal action for breach of trust.

According to the lawyer, a husband’s demand for a DNA paternity test within marriage can amount to emotional distress and a breakdown of trust, which may form the basis for a civil claim. She argued that marriage should not be driven by suspicion and encouraged women to protect their legal rights.

Her comments quickly gained traction online, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerians across social media platforms.

While some users agreed with the lawyer’s position, describing it as a bold defence of women’s dignity and trust in marriage, others criticised the advice as excessive, arguing that requesting a DNA test should not automatically be treated as wrongdoing.

The viral discussion comes amid growing public conversations around paternity disputes, DNA testing, and family trust in Nigeria, with several recent cases involving public figures, celebrities, and private individuals openly demanding DNA tests to settle paternity claims.

Legal analysts note that while DNA testing is increasingly used to resolve disputes over parentage, such issues often carry emotional, social, and legal consequences that extend beyond the test results, especially within marriage.

The debate continues to trend online, highlighting changing attitudes toward marriage, trust, and paternity verification in Nigeria’s evolving social landscape.
