Hon. Sunday Umeha
LP structure has collapsed, says Enugu Rep member after joining APC
Hon. Sunday Umeha, the member representing Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Umeha made the announcement during a rally in Ibagwa-Aka, Igboeze South Local Government Area over the weekend, marking the first time an elected federal lawmaker from Enugu has joined the APC since its formation in 2014.
Citing internal crises within the Labour Party, Umeha said he had already resigned from the LP at his ward level and officially joined the APC.
“Beyond the crisis in the Labour Party, there’s a need to connect our people to the centre,” he said.
He also lauded APC-led federal projects in the South East, including the Second Niger Bridge and the ongoing reconstruction of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The rally, although held outside Umeha’s constituency, was organized in support of Chief Joshua Ogbonna, a former financier of the Labour Party in Igboeze South, who led the mass defection.

Umeha said a formal reception would soon be held in his own constituency, Ezeagu.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, APC chieftain George Ogara described the defection as a political milestone.
“What happened here today has never happened in Enugu politics,” he declared.
APC State Chairman, Barr. Ugochukwu Agballah, said the Labour Party’s structure in Igboeze South had collapsed entirely.
He blamed the ruling PDP for worsening economic hardship in the state through excessive taxation and demolitions.
“With this broom, we are sweeping away 26 years of stagnation,” Agballah declared.
Agballah also acknowledged the donation of a zonal campaign office in Nsukka by APC stalwart Peter Okonkwo.
