Aba, Abia State — Tensions have erupted within the Abia State House of Assembly following a violent altercation between Labour Party (LP) lawmakers during a private caucus meeting in Aba, allegedly over the sharing of funds linked to the passage of a ₦150 billion supplementary budget.

Sources revealed that the Majority Leader, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu (Arochukwu Constituency), attacked Hon. Akachukwu Ucheonye (Aba Central Constituency) with a beer bottle, causing a deep head wound and concussion. The incident reportedly occurred at the residence of Hon. Fyne Ahuama (Osisioma Ngwa South Constituency), where LP lawmakers had gathered to discuss internal matters.

The meeting, which was also attended by Speaker Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, allegedly turned chaotic after disagreements over the distribution of funds purportedly disbursed by Governor Alex Otti as a gesture of appreciation for the swift passage of the budget. Hon. Ucheonye, who chairs the House Committee on Appropriation, Budget, and Planning, reportedly demanded a larger share, citing his role in the process—prompting the violent reaction from the Majority Leader.

“The Speaker was present and urged members not to report the incident or leak it to the media,” a source disclosed.

Hon. Ucheonye was rushed to a private clinic for emergency treatment and later sent a message to Governor Otti, attaching photos and a video of his injuries.

London Retreat Sparks Fresh Crisis

Days after the incident, Ucheonye joined fellow lawmakers on a state-sponsored retreat to London, allegedly costing taxpayers nearly ₦1 billion. The delegation reportedly flew first class and lodged at the Premier Inn London Town Centre Hotel, Croydon.

However, the retreat soon descended into another dispute. Multiple lawmakers accused the Speaker, Deputy Speaker Augustine Meregini, and Majority Leader Kalu of withholding portions of the travel allowances. Some claimed they received only 40% of the allocated funds. Hotel staff reportedly intervened to prevent another physical confrontation.

Impeachment Plot Brews

Amid growing dissatisfaction, a faction within the LP caucus is reportedly plotting to impeach the Speaker and other principal officers over alleged financial misconduct and abuse of office.

“The plan is already in motion,” a lawmaker confirmed. “Many members are unhappy with how funds were handled both in Aba and in London.”

As the Assembly braces for potential upheaval, political observers are watching closely to see how the crisis will impact governance and party cohesion in Abia State.
