Man Faces Federal Charges Over Threat to Kill US Vice President
A 33-year-old Ohio man has been charged by United States federal authorities for allegedly threatening to kill the US Vice President, raising fresh concerns over threats against public officials and political violence.
According to court filings, the suspect, identified as Shannon Mathre, was indicted by a federal grand jury after investigators linked him to alleged threats made during a recent visit by US Vice President JD Vance to Ohio. Prosecutors said the threats were specific enough to prompt an immediate investigation by federal law enforcement agencies.
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) disclosed that the suspect was arrested by the US Secret Service and other federal agents and has since appeared before a US Magistrate Judge in the Northern District of Ohio. He is currently being held pending a detention hearing.

Authorities said the charge of threatening a US Vice President carries a possible sentence of up to five years in federal prison, if convicted. Investigators also disclosed that during the course of the probe, additional alleged offences were uncovered, leading to separate federal charges against the suspect.
The DOJ stressed that threats against senior government officials are taken extremely seriously and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, noting that such actions pose risks not only to individuals but to national security and democratic institutions.
Federal officials reiterated that making threats—whether online, verbal, or written—against elected leaders remains a serious crime under US federal law, regardless of whether the suspect had the immediate capacity to carry them out.
The case has been adjourned to a later date as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
