Maritime police arrest two suspects over impersonation, extortion

Operatives of the Maritime Police Command in Lagos have arrested two members of staff of CMA-CGM Nigeria Limited for posing as its officers to allegedly extort unsuspecting members of the public at the seaports.

The suspects, Gbenga Solomon, said to be the  Customer Service Officer of CMA-CGM Nigeria Limited, and Erhimu Igho,  were said to have forged the Command’s official investigation documents allegedly used to  blackmail their victims.

The duo, according to acting  spokesman for the command, ASP Ehinmode Adewunmi,  were arrested  after a complaint was lodged at the Maritime Police Command headquarters that some containers were blocked with purported documents from the Command.

He said the  action was  contrary to the directives of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of  Maritime Police Command, AIG Olofu Rhoda, who, on assumption of office in November 2023, ordered the immediate release of all containers blocked or placed on lien at the ports without cogent reasons.

Adewunmi said, “ The directive  was to give effect to the Federal Government’s policy on Ease of Doing Businesses at the country’s seaports . She warned  that blocking of containers should be based only on credible information”.
