Mass Shooting at Brown University in US Leaves 2 Dead, 9 Injured

At least two students were killed and nine others wounded in a mass shooting on Saturday at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. inside a classroom in the Barus and Holley engineering building on Hope Street, during ongoing final exams. Providence Police Deputy Chief Tim O’Hara said the suspect, described as a man dressed in black, was last seen leaving the building on foot. Police released surveillance footage on X showing a person matching the gunman’s description near campus.

No weapons were found at the scene, and a shelter-in-place order remains in effect for the greater Brown University area.

The FBI Boston confirmed it is assisting local law enforcement with investigative, tactical, and victim support, while the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is also on site. More than 400 officers have been deployed to secure the campus and surrounding areas.

School officials are working to determine who was in the building at the time, as multiple final exams were scheduled from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The building’s outer doors were reportedly unlocked due to the exams.

Local residents expressed shock at the violence. Elias Christian, living near campus, described the incident as “scary” and said, “This is known as a safe part of the city… We’re basically on Brown’s campus. This is the heart of Brown.”

Former US President Donald Trump, briefed on the situation, called the event “terrible” and urged prayers for the victims. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee also condemned the attack, saying, “The unthinkable has happened.”

Brown University, a private Ivy League institution with more than 11,000 students, has 100% of first-year undergraduates living on campus. The Barus and Holley building houses both classrooms and lab spaces. Providence is located about 50 miles south of Boston.

Authorities continue to search for the suspect, who remains at large.
