Massive housing, e-tracking projects herald two years of Baruwa, NURTW boss (photos)

Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) are celebrating their National President, Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, for his giant strides within two years of being in office.

Baruwa inaugurated on August 20, 2019 is credited to have introduced the union’s transport company; massive housing project for employees of the NURTW; electronic tracking of the union’s commercial vehicles while in transit, among other achievements.

Some state councils and members of staff of the union at the national headquarters, Abuja recently rolled out the drums to mark the remarkable achievements of the Baruwa-led executives in the last 24 months.

Although Baruwa by nature is considered a quiet man, some state councils and individuals were said to have decided that the two-year anniversary must not go uncelebrated, hence the festivity that was recently witnessed at the Abuja headquarters of the union.

For instance, men of the Kano State council of the union trooped to Abuja to felicitate with the NURTW president.

Also, staffers at the headquarters were not left out as they expressed appreciation to the Baruwa-led administration, especially for reaching out to them during the COVID-19 economic lockdown.

They enumerated some the achievements of Baruwa executives as diversification of the union sources of revenue by inaugurating a transport company and inauguration of filling station to augment the union finances.

The administration is said to have constantly ensured payment of salaries and other emoluments of staffers and members of the union as and when due.

Apart from payment of salaries, it has also reportedly ensured that employees who are due for promotion get elevated promptly.

To check case of insecurity among commercial drivers plying highways, the union under Baruwa has introduced electronic tracking of vehicles, which has helped to curb the menace of kidnapping of the union’s drivers and passengers of its vehicles in transit.

The union under the administration has embarked on massive housing scheme for members and staffers of the union at the headquarters.

Commenting on the impact of the e-tracking, Baruwa said, “The issue of insecurity is worrisome. Many of our members have been kidnapped across the country. We have lost many of them to the menace of insecurity and without compensation to their families from the government. The e-tracking policy will help the safety of passengers and our members.”

Even as the NURTW workers and leaders celebrated the union’s president with his team, hailing him for a job well done, like Oliver Twist, they also asked for more from the administration.
