MC Oluomo Insists He Remains NURTW President Amid Baruwa Takeover
The leadership crisis within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has intensified as Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, reaffirmed that he remains the union’s National President despite a reported takeover of its Abuja secretariat by a rival faction.
The development followed claims by Tajudeen Baruwa that he had assumed control of the union’s national headquarters, citing court rulings he believes validate his leadership position. The move has triggered fresh tension within the influential transport body, with both camps asserting authority.
In a statement shared via his official Instagram page on Monday, MC Oluomo described the incident as a “forceful takeover”, insisting that the legal dispute over the union’s leadership is still ongoing and far from resolved.
He clarified that the court judgment being referenced by Baruwa’s camp did not involve him directly, and therefore cannot be used as a basis to remove him from office. According to him, the ruling has already been appealed, and a stay of execution has been secured, meaning the status quo should be maintained pending the final determination of the case.
“The National President wishes to intimate members of the union and the general public that he was not a defendant in the purported judgment,” the statement read.

MC Oluomo also stated that he has deliberately refrained from engaging Baruwa or any other individuals involved in the dispute, given that the matter is still before the court. He emphasized that due process must be allowed to run its course without interference.
He further disclosed that security agencies have taken control of the situation to prevent any breakdown of law and order at the union’s secretariat and across motor parks nationwide, where tensions could potentially spill over.
The NURTW crisis has been brewing for months, with factions emerging over leadership legitimacy, court rulings, and control of the union’s national structure. The union, which plays a critical role in Nigeria’s transport system and grassroots mobilization, has historically been prone to internal power struggles with significant political and economic implications.
Observers note that the latest development could further deepen divisions within the union if not urgently resolved, especially given its influence over commercial transport operations across major cities.
MC Oluomo, however, urged members to remain calm and avoid any actions that could escalate tensions, warning that violence or disruption would only worsen the situation.
As both factions continue to rely on legal and institutional backing to assert control, the final resolution of the leadership tussle is expected to depend on ongoing court proceedings and possible intervention by relevant authorities.
