Mexico thrash Nigeria 4-0 in friendly match

The home-based squad of the Super Eagles of Nigeria was thrashed 4-0 by the El Tri of Mexico in a friendly game on Sunday morning.

Héctor Herrera opened scoring in the first minute of the game from a corner kick.

Rogelio Funes Mori then doubled Mexico’s lead just a minute from their first goal through a counter attack.

It was a blistering start from the Mexicans in the first half which ended 2-0 at the Memorial Coliseum stadium in Los Angeles, California.

Herrera, the Atlético Madrid player, netted is third from a rebound by Nwabali Stanley after a shot from Hirving Lozano.

Anayo Iwuala dazzled but all his efforts never connected to make any impact on the scoreboard.

He also broke free in the 63rd minute to try to reduce the tally but his cross was easily saved by Talavera.

In the 77th minute, Jonathan Dos Santos’ screamer completed Eagles humiliation in the hands of the Mexicans.

The defeat is Nigeria’s 8th winless run in friendly matches – sixth encounter against Mexico in which the Eagles have failed to beat them.

The nation last won a friendly game on March 26, 2019 against Egypt at the Stephen Keshi stadium, Asaba, Delta state.

The game was used by Mexico as a tune up for the 2021 Gold Cup.
