Mob Lynches Destitute Woman in Ilorin Over False Kidnapping Claim
A destitute woman was lynched by a mob in Ilorin on Thursday after being falsely accused of attempting to kidnap a child.
The attack took place around 9am at Ipata Market, a busy area in the Kwara State capital.
Eyewitnesses said the woman was wrongly suspected of kidnapping and was quickly surrounded by a crowd who began to beat her mercilessly.
A police patrol team responded swiftly and rescued the woman, rushing her to the General Hospital, Ilorin. Sadly, she was pronounced dead from her injuries shortly after arrival. Her body has been deposited in the hospital morgue.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Kwara State Police Command condemned the mob action as “barbaric and unacceptable.”
Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, called for calm and urged residents to report suspicious activity to law enforcement rather than resorting to violence.
“Jungle justice is not only unlawful—it puts innocent lives at risk and worsens insecurity,” the statement read.
“We urge all residents to work with the police to maintain peace, order, and justice.”
Police said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.
