Mohbad: Court-Supervised DNA Samples Collected From Singer’s Remains, Son Liam

Three-year paternity controversy reaches crucial stage as forensic examination begins; results yet to be announced

The prolonged paternity controversy surrounding late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has reached a significant stage following the collection of DNA samples from his remains and his son, Liam, under court supervision.

The exercise, which took place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, is expected to provide scientific evidence to help establish whether the young boy is the biological son of the late singer.

The development marks a major step in a dispute that has continued to generate intense public debate since Mohbad’s death in September 2023.

According to reports, the sample collection followed an application by Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi Aloba, seeking a court-supervised DNA examination to determine Liam’s paternity.

The court approved the application and appointed a welfare officer to supervise the exercise, with October 31 fixed for the collection of the required samples.

Samples were reportedly collected from Mohbad’s remains at Mainland General Hospital, popularly known as the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Yaba, Lagos.

They were subsequently transported under tight security to the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, where samples were also collected from Liam for further forensic examination.

The exercise was conducted amid heightened security arrangements to prevent possible disturbances, following concerns about potential public protests and calls by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, for support from his online followers.

Mohbad’s mother, Abosede; younger brother, Adura; and widow, Omowunmi, were reportedly present during the proceedings.

The exercise was said to have been particularly emotional during the identification of the late singer’s remains, which formed part of the procedure.

Aloba Family Raises Concerns Over DNA Testing Process

The sample collection came despite earlier objections from members of the Aloba family, who had questioned the transparency and technical arrangements for the proposed DNA examination.

Before the October 31 exercise, the family called for its postponement, demanding disclosure of the identity of a United States laboratory reportedly expected to conduct the actual DNA analysis.

In a statement signed by the family head, Samuel Aloba, the family sought clarification on whether the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre would conduct the examination itself or merely collect and transfer the samples to an overseas laboratory.

The family also requested information about the proposed laboratory’s accreditation, technical competence and procedures for preserving, transporting and examining the biological samples.

It further demanded adequate documentation of the chain of custody to establish that the samples collected were the same specimens eventually received and analysed by the laboratory.

The family maintained that its concerns were not intended to frustrate the DNA examination but to ensure that the process was transparent, scientifically credible and capable of withstanding independent scrutiny.

It also clarified that its concerns about possible interference or mishandling did not amount to proof that the exercise had been compromised.

DNA Results: No Release Date Yet

Speaking after the sample collection, the lawyer representing Omowunmi, Barrister Kabiru, disclosed that no specific date had been fixed for the release of the DNA results.

He explained that the parties involved would be formally notified through the court once the forensic examination had been completed and the results became available.

The lawyer also commended the court and the Nigeria Police Force for their professionalism and coordination in ensuring that the exercise was successfully conducted under adequate security.

Mohbad’s Death and the Lingering Family Dispute

Mohbad, who died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, was one of Nigeria’s fast-rising music stars before his death sparked nationwide outrage and calls for a thorough investigation.

His death generated widespread controversy, leading to the exhumation of his remains for an autopsy and subsequent investigations into the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Apart from the unresolved questions surrounding his death, the dispute over Liam’s paternity has remained one of the major issues dividing members of his family.

His father, Joseph Aloba, has repeatedly questioned the boy’s paternity and demanded a DNA examination, while the controversy has continued to attract public attention and heated exchanges across social media.

The paternity proceedings have also experienced delays, with a related court matter reportedly adjourned to November 16, 2026.

With samples now collected from both Mohbad’s remains and Liam, attention has shifted to the forensic examination and the eventual outcome.

The result is expected to provide scientific evidence to assist the court in determining the paternity question, although the outcome remains unknown.

For now, the public awaits the findings of the examination, which could bring clarity to one of the most contentious family disputes to emerge following the death of the late Afrobeats star.
