Mohbad’s family demands DNA test, bars widow from using ‘Aloba’ surname

The family of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has asked his widow, Wunmi, to stop using the Aloba surname and to conduct a DNA test to confirm the paternity of her son, Liam.

In a statement signed by the Head of the Aloba family, Adedara Aloba, and a principal member, Joseph Aloba, the family said the decision was taken “in pursuit of truth, justice, and accountability” in the ongoing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and estate.

To ensure proper management of Mohbad’s estate, the family announced the appointment of Samuel Ajewole Aloba, Engr. Ayodele Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Mrs. Alonge Ibukun Oluwaseun Aloba as administrators.

According to the statement, one position has been reserved for Mohbad’s widow, Miss Cynthia Wunmi Adebanjo, if a court-ordered DNA test confirms that her son, Liam, is indeed the late singer’s biological child.

“These administrators are authorised to immediately apply for Letters of Administration from the Probate Registry to lawfully manage all estate assets, including royalties, bank holdings, real and personal property, and musical intellectual property,” the family stated.

The administrators were also mandated to recover and safeguard Mohbad’s royalties, earnings, and intellectual property rights through legal means.

Clarifying the status of the late singer’s relationship, the family noted that no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between Mohbad and Wunmi, as the required Yoruba traditional rites, including the payment of bride price, were never completed.

“While acknowledging that an introduction took place and plans for marriage existed, the family formally requests that Cynthia Wunmi Adebanjo cease using the surname ‘Aloba’ in public or private records until lawful confirmation of paternity is obtained and family approval is given,” the statement added.

The family further disclosed the appointment of Oladayo Ogungbe, Esq., of Ogungbe & Ogungbe Attorneys, as its sole legal representative for all matters relating to the DNA case and Mohbad’s estate.

It also confirmed that Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) of Wahab Shittu & Co. would continue to represent the family in engagements with investigative authorities on the ongoing probe into Mohbad’s death.

The Aloba family said a new burial date and memorial plan would be announced after the conclusion of all internal and legal processes relating to the DNA test and estate matters.
