Mother, son arrested for selling ₦22m Lagos apartment without owner’s consent

Operatives of Zone 2 Command in Lagos have arrested a woman, her son and a co-accused for allegedly conspiring to sell a three-bedroom apartment without the owner’s consent.

Those arrested are 53-year-old woman, Roseline Emeso Odior Adeku, and her son, Greg Abemere Odior Adeku, 28, alongside a co-accused, Rick Ugbo Azubuike, 58.

The apartment, located at 8 Faluyi Street, Ajuwon, Lagos, was purportedly sold to Mr Okoror Ehiaghe Godspower and Mrs Okoror Olubunmi Modupe for ₦22 million.

However, the actual owner, Gilbert Odior Adeku, denied any knowledge of the sale and stated that the property was never up for sale.

Police investigations revealed that Greg Adeku allegedly approached the Commissioner for Oaths at Ikeja High Court on 4 October 2024, where he swore an affidavit claiming ownership of the property.

He then allegedly used the affidavit to facilitate the fraudulent sale, despite knowing he was not the rightful owner.

The alleged fraud came to light when the buyers attempted to take possession of the property, only to be informed by Gilbert Adeku that the sale was invalid.

Shocked by the development, the buyers filed a petition with the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, who directed the swift arrest of the suspects.

The defendants were arraigned at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting at Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island, on five charges, including unlawful property takeover, forgery, and theft.

According to Police Prosecutor ASP Ibrahim Haruna, the defendants knowingly used forged documents to fraudulently sell the apartment for ₦22 million.

He stated that the offences violated sections 411, 80, 314, and 287 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate A.O. Alogba granted them bail at ₦500,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.

Pending the fulfilment of their bail conditions, the court ordered their remand at the Ikoyi and Kirikiri correctional facilities.

The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
