Mourinho returns to Benfica as manager 25 years after

Jose Mourinho is heading back to where it all began.

According to Sky Sports, the 62-year-old has agreed a two-year deal to become Benfica manager, 25 years after his first spell at the club.

Mourinho, who was sacked by Fenerbahce last month following their Champions League exit, flew into Portugal from Barcelona on Wednesday night, where fans draped a Benfica scarf around his neck.

Speaking briefly to reporters, he kept his cards close but admitted the approach from Benfica was one he couldn’t ignore:

“When I was faced with the possibility of coaching Benfica, I didn’t think twice. I’m interested, I’d like it,” Mourinho said.

The Portuguese tactician first managed Benfica back in 2000 but resigned after just 10 games following a change in club leadership. He then moved on to Uniao de Leiria before his legendary rise with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Roma.

Benfica parted ways with Bruno Lage after a shock Champions League defeat to Qarabag and want Mourinho in charge before their weekend clash with Vila das Aves.

His return also sets up a dramatic Champions League tie later this month — Benfica versus Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
