MURIC criticizes CAN over alleged support for genocide claims amid U.S. redesignation of Nigeria

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly criticized the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for allegedly endorsing claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria, following the United States’ recent decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC).

In a statement issued by Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Founder and Executive Director of MURIC, the group accused CAN of undermining President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, despite what it described as unprecedented goodwill shown to Christian communities.

Tinubu’s Alleged Preferential Appointments Akintola cited President Tinubu’s own admission that 62% of federal appointments had gone to Christians, describing the gesture as evidence of the administration’s inclusive approach. He also praised First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu for her philanthropic efforts, calling her “more generous than Father Christmas” in her support for Christian causes.

“CAN’s action is a stab in the back,” Akintola said. “In spite of all that was done for Nigerian Christians by this administration, they still deemed it fit to take Nigeria to the enabler of Gaza genocide.”

U.S. Redesignation Sparks Controversy The controversy follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision on Friday to place Nigeria back on the CPC list, citing alleged persecution of Christians. MURIC condemned the move, calling it “blurred, misplaced and distorted,” and a misrepresentation of Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

CAN Accused of Amplifying False Narratives MURIC expressed disappointment with CAN’s alleged role in amplifying claims that Christians are the sole victims of terrorism in Nigeria. The group argued that both Christians and Muslims have suffered from attacks by criminal and extremist groups, which often target crowded venues such as churches and mosques.

“Instead of debunking this false and misleading narrative, CAN simply amplified it,” Akintola stated, referring to petitions reportedly sent by Christian leaders to the U.S. Congress.

Call for Balanced Representation MURIC urged religious leaders to present a more balanced view of Nigeria’s security situation and avoid actions that could further polarize the nation. The group emphasized the need for unity and responsible advocacy in addressing terrorism and religious violence.

As tensions rise over international perceptions of Nigeria’s religious dynamics, the debate underscores the delicate balance between domestic policy, religious representation, and global diplomacy.
