MURIC urges Wike to tackle mounting waste crisis in Abuja

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Abuja Chapter, has appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to urgently address the worsening waste management situation in the nation’s capital.

The group, in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its Chairman, Ustaz Yunus Salahudeen, and Public Relations Officer, Lukman Laleye Babalola, expressed concern over the increasing accumulation of refuse across the city, warning that Abuja’s reputation as a clean and orderly capital was fast deteriorating.

“Abuja, once celebrated for its cleanliness and order, is increasingly becoming overwhelmed by waste accumulation, turning what was once a model city into one full of refuse and environmental degradation,” the statement read.

MURIC noted that the poor state of waste management in the Federal Capital Territory poses serious risks to public health, the well-being of residents, and the city’s aesthetics. It therefore called on the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and other relevant agencies to give the matter top priority.

The organisation urged the FCT Administration to establish a reliable and frequent waste collection schedule, particularly in densely populated areas such as the Central Area, Wuse, Garki, Maitama, Asokoro, and the five Area Councils.

It also advocated the provision of additional waste disposal trucks, their proper maintenance, and the adoption of night-time waste collection to reduce odour pollution and traffic congestion. MURIC further called for the deployment of motorised street sweeping machines to enhance city cleanliness.

The group emphasised the need for public awareness campaigns to educate residents on proper waste disposal practices, stressing that environmental cleanliness requires collective responsibility.

“MURIC calls on the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to take urgent and comprehensive steps to tackle this growing challenge. Abuja must regain its status as a clean, healthy, and thriving capital,” the statement added.
