National Grid Collapses Again, Second Time in Five Days

Nigeria has been plunged into another nationwide blackout after the national electricity grid collapsed for the second time in five days, worsening concerns over the country’s fragile power infrastructure.

The latest collapse occurred on Tuesday morning, forcing electricity generation and load allocation to drop to zero megawatts (MW) across the country. All 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) were affected, leaving homes, businesses, hospitals, and public facilities without power.

This incident follows a similar national grid collapse recorded on January 23, marking one of the fastest repeat system failures in recent years.

According to preliminary reports from power sector operators, the collapse was triggered by a major system disturbance, including the tripping of critical transmission lines and the sudden disconnection of several generation plants. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) have yet to issue a detailed technical explanation.

Industry analysts note that Nigeria’s power grid instability has become increasingly frequent, with several collapses recorded in late 2025 and early 2026, despite ongoing reforms in the electricity sector.

Experts continue to attribute the recurring failures to aging transmission infrastructure, poor maintenance culture, weak grid protection systems, and unstable power generation. The repeated collapses have also heightened Nigeria’s dependence on diesel and petrol generators, increasing operating costs for businesses and households.

The latest outage has renewed calls for urgent investment in grid modernization, transmission expansion, and stronger operational oversight to prevent further disruptions to Nigeria’s economy.
