NCC Issues Warning to Telecom Operators Over Poor Network Performance

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a stern warning to telecom operators in Nigeria to improve network performance or risk regulatory action. The directive follows widespread subscriber complaints of epileptic telecom services during the festive season.

To back its warning, the NCC released a data-driven report developed in partnership with Ookla, a global leader in network intelligence and performance measurement, showing where each mobile network operator stands in terms of download and upload speeds, latency, and jitter.

The report highlighted that MTN maintains the strongest national network profile, delivering consistent high-speed connectivity with stable latency and jitter values. Airtel experienced some performance dips amid its transition to 5G, though it still leads in urban 4G download speeds.

9mobile (T2) was found to have variable performance across regions, with occasional high-speed peaks but an overall national quality gap. Globacom (Glo) was singled out for latency and jitter issues, which negatively affect real-time applications such as video calls and online payments.

The NCC emphasized that the report, published quarterly, aims to empower consumers to make informed choices based on unbiased analytics, rather than marketing claims.

A senior NCC official, speaking anonymously, said, “For the Commission, the gloves are off. Telcos must adjust or face the hammer. Data-driven regulation strengthens transparency, drives better service delivery, and attracts infrastructure investment for reliable connectivity across Nigeria.”

The regulator urged operators to prioritize network stability and service reliability, warning that evidence-based interventions will be enforced to ensure high-quality telecom services for all Nigerians.
