NCDC: Nigeria recorded 1,074 COVID-19 cases on January 1

  • 4,176 Lagosians undergoing home treatment, says commissioner

Nigeria recorded a total of 1,074 cases of COVID-19 on Friday, the first day of the new year, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 88,587.

This came with a disclosure by the Lagos State Government that at least 4,176 persons infected with the coronavirus disease in the state are currently undergoing home-based treatment in the second wave of the infection.

Also five deaths were recorded on the same day, bringing the total number of deaths so far to 1,294.

A daily report of COVID-19 spread and containment measures posted on the website of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also showed that so far 74,373 cases had been discharged in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory

The 1074 new cases were reported from 15 states- Lagos (642), Kaduna (92), Rivers (78), FCT (66), Gombe (66), Kano (35), Ogun (31), Katsina (22), Plateau (20), Abia (7), Niger (4), Oyo (4), Akwa Ibom (3), Delta (2), and Osun (2).

The NCDC said a multi-sectoral national emergency operations centre (EOC) had been activated at Level 3, and that it has continued to coordinate the national response activities.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, has said 4,176 people with COVID-19 infection are being treated at home.

He gave the figures on Friday via his Twitter handle, @ProfAkinAbayomi, adding that 115 cases were in isolation.

Abayomi wrote, “Total number of #COVID19 recovery in communities – 22,789; cases currently under isolation – 115; active cases under home-based care – 4,176; new #COVID19 related death – 3; total deaths – 240.”

He gave the number of COVID-19 cases discharged from Lagos care centres as 2,901,adding that three new coronavirus-related deaths were recorded, bringing the total COVID-19-related fatalities in the state to 240.

The commissioner also listed the top five local government areas in the state with high COVID-19 cases as Eti-Osa, Mushin, Surulere, Amuwo-Odofin and Ajeromi.

He urged people to stay safe, avoid crowded places, stressing that those who have no reason to move around should stay at home.

In his earlier tweet on December 30, 2020, Abayomi said COVID-19 infections in Lagos were 30,221.
