NDLEA arrests two ladies over 296,000 tablets of hard drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested two women, Chioma Afam and Peace Caleb, for allegedly trying to smuggle 296,000 tablets of Diazepam and Exol-5 from Onitsha, Anambra State to Gombe state.
Spokesman for the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Wednesday, said Afam used multiple identities and wore hijabs to evade security scrutiny.
He said, “Chioma who uses multiple names such as Amina, Uzoamaka and Ifunaya to cover her criminal activities was arrested on Saturday 17th July 2021 along with the 22-year-old Peace Chidinma Caleb who also wears a hijab as a cover for her nefarious activities during routine checks and profiling of inward vehicles into Makurdi, the Benue state capital. Their vehicle coming from Onitsha, Anambra State was intercepted along Makurdi – Alliade road while heading to Gombe State via Makurdi.
“A search of their vehicle led to the discovery of 43kilograms of Diazepam and 33kg of Exol-5, both weighing 76 kilograms with a total of Two Hundred and Ninety-Six Thousand (296,000) tablets packed in four large ‘Ghana must go’ bags. Curiously, the two interstate drug traffickers have rebuffed efforts to take pictures with the exhibits without wearing their hijab.”
Babafemi also said the Ondo command of the agency on Sunday 18th July 2021 intercepted one Olu Ameh, a commercial motorcycle rider with 465 kilograms of cannabis Sativa along Ijagba-Ute road in the Ose local government area of the state.
“The illicit substance was said to have been bought from one Joseph in Ago-Akure, Akure North LGA and being conveyed to the buyer, a certain Egbonwon at Ijagba village in Ose LGA,” the statement said.

The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the deaths of a man and a teenage girl whose bodies were discovered inside a Toyota Corolla in Mgboushimini community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
The incident was confirmed on Monday by the police spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, who said the command had commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine their causes.
Agabe confirmed the development in a text message but did not provide further details about the identities of the deceased or the events leading to their deaths.
The discovery has generated concern in the community, with reports suggesting that the circumstances surrounding the incident may involve a relationship dispute. However, the police have not confirmed any link between the alleged dispute and the deaths.

According to reports, the deceased man’s wife was pregnant and had allegedly confronted the teenage girl over a reported relationship with her husband. The couple were also said to have completed their traditional marriage rites and were preparing for their white wedding, reportedly scheduled for November 2026.
These details have yet to be independently confirmed by the police, and no conclusion has been announced regarding the cause of death or whether any criminal act was involved.
The investigation is expected to establish what happened before the bodies were discovered and determine the circumstances in which the two died.
As of Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the Rivers State Police Command had not publicly disclosed further findings in the case.
The case remains under investigation, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear.

EFCC Busts Four Illegal Lithium Plants in Ogun, Arrests 14 Chinese Nationals
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 14 Chinese nationals and one Nigerian during raids on four suspected illegal lithium-processing plants in Ogere, Ogun State.
The suspects were arrested on Friday, October 23, 2026, by operatives of the commission’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 following intelligence gathering and surveillance.
The EFCC announced the arrests on Monday, October 26, saying the operation targeted four facilities allegedly involved in illegal lithium-processing activities.
Items recovered during the operation included bags of lithium-bearing rocks, 18 mobile devices, four laptop computers, two decoders, a television remote control and a trailer truck.

The arrests come amid increased attention on Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, as the government seeks to develop mineral resources and strengthen regulation of mining and processing activities.
Lithium is a key mineral used in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, mobile phones, laptops and energy-storage systems. Growing demand for battery materials has increased interest in lithium deposits and processing opportunities in Nigeria.
However, authorities have repeatedly raised concerns about unauthorised mineral operations and the need to ensure that mineral resources are exploited in accordance with applicable laws.
The latest case remains under investigation, and the suspects have not been convicted of any offence.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine the next legal steps against the 15 suspects and clarify the circumstances surrounding the operations of the four facilities.

Cancelled Wedding: Man Sues Ex-Fiancée’s Father Over Unpaid ₦70,000 Dowry
A man in Kaduna State, Bilyaminu Idris, has dragged his former fiancée’s father, Alhassan Dayyabu, before a Sharia Court over an alleged failure to refund the outstanding ₦70,000 from a dowry paid for a marriage that was later cancelled.
Idris filed the complaint at the Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, seeking the recovery of the outstanding amount after waiting for five months without receiving the balance.
The complainant told the court that he had paid ₦220,000 as dowry in preparation for marrying Dayyabu’s daughter. However, the proposed marriage was subsequently cancelled.
According to Idris, Dayyabu refunded ₦150,000 but promised to pay the remaining ₦70,000 at a later date.

He alleged that the defendant repeatedly promised to settle the balance over the following five months but failed to do so.
“He kept making empty promises on paying the balance for five months but failed. I pray the court to compel him to pay me the money,” Idris told the court.
In his response, Dayyabu reportedly acknowledged owing the complainant the outstanding ₦70,000 but appealed to the court for more time to raise the money.
After hearing from both parties, the presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiyah Shehu, adjourned the case until November 26, 2026, to allow the defendant to pay the outstanding amount.
The case highlights a dispute over the recovery of dowry following the cancellation of a proposed marriage, with the court expected to revisit the matter on the adjourned date.
