NDLEA intercepts trailer loaded with cannabis in Abuja

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully intercepted a 40-foot trailer containing over 2,200 kilograms of skunk, a potent cannabis variant, in the Kagini area of Kubwa, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The operation led to the arrest of a 42-year-old suspect, Isaac Desmond, at approximately 1:20 am on Saturday, January 11, 2025.

The drugs were being transferred into six vehicles at an abandoned fuel station in preparation for distribution across northern states.

According to Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, the bust was the result of a carefully planned intelligence-led operation.

“Preliminary investigations have shown that the drugs were sourced from Uzebba, located in the Owan Local Government Area of Edo State,” Babafemi said.

He further noted that the vehicles seized included a Toyota van, a Toyota Camry, a Toyota Sienna minibus, a JAC Hilux truck, a Toyota Corolla, and a Vento Passat.

The NDLEA said : “A 40ft trailer load of skunk, a strain of cannabis, weighing 2,217.6 kilograms has been intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, while being distributed into six vehicles at an abandoned fuel station in Kagini, Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja for onward distribution to some Northern states.”

The statement continued, “The intelligence-led operation, which took place at 1:20 am on Saturday 11th January 2025, led to the seizure of not only the large illicit consignment but also the trailer and the six vehicles: Toyota Van, Toyota Camry car, Toyota Sienna bus, JAC 4-wheel-drive Hilux truck, Toyota Corolla car, and a Vento Passat car, as well as the arrest of a suspect: 42-year-old Isaac Monday Desmond. The consignment was loaded into the trailer at Uzebba in Owan local council area of Edo State.”

In a separate incident in the FCT, the NDLEA also apprehended two additional suspects, Anthony Nnamdi, 42, and Abba Ali, 27, at Nyanya.

The anti-narcotic agency also recovered a combined 1.398 kilograms of cocaine and a precursor substance used for producing crack cocaine.
