New CG set to emerge at Customs, may get supervisor
Deputy Comptroller General Hamzat Gummi may replace the incumbent Comptroller General, Hameed Ali, a retired colonel, at the Nigeria Customs Service.
Gunmi heads tariff and trade section at the agency.
A report by The Nation on Wednesday however stated a Principal Staff Officer (PSO) outside the NCS could be appointed as superior to the CG.
It quoted an NCS source as explaining that the idea of a PSO would limit the service from having a career officer from being fully in charge.
The source also said some All Progressives Congress (APC) politicians from the North-West were rooting for Gummi.
He said the agenda was being promoted by a group determined to sustain legacies of Ali, including continuation of Customs modernisation project that had become controversial and subject of litigation.
He said under the arrangement, there will be a PSO, a serving general, but working at Customs headquarters.
But many officers view this as an anomaly in a customs management setting.
