New York Elects First Muslim Mayor as Democrats Sweep Key U.S. Races
Democrats secured sweeping victories in key U.S. elections on Tuesday, in what analysts are calling the first significant political barometer of President Donald Trump’s turbulent second term.
In New York City, progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani was projected to win the mayoral race, making history as the city’s first Muslim mayor. The Democratic socialist and state assemblyman defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in a race that highlighted the growing influence of the party’s left wing.

Across the river in New Jersey, Democratic congresswoman Mikie Sherrill emerged victorious in the gubernatorial contest, defeating Republican businessman and former state lawmaker Jack Ciattarelli. Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and national security expert, ran on a platform centred on economic growth and strengthening public services.
Democrats also celebrated a historic breakthrough in Virginia, where Abigail Spanberger was projected to become the state’s first female governor. The moderate three-term congresswoman and former CIA officer defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, a vocal Trump ally.
The trio of wins — in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia — marks a strong start for Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The results also signal shifting voter sentiment, posing fresh political challenges for the Trump administration as it enters the second year of its renewed tenure.
