Nigerian Navy Chief of Operations Dies in Egypt

The Nigerian Navy has confirmed the passing of its Chief of Operations, Rear Admiral Musa Bello Katagum, who died on February 19, 2026, in Egypt following a brief illness. The news was officially announced by the Director of Naval Information, Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, in a statement released on behalf of the service.

Rear Admiral Katagum, who served at the Naval Headquarters (NHQ), reportedly died while receiving medical treatment abroad and was subsequently buried according to Islamic rites. The Navy described his loss as a profound blow to the service, highlighting his dedication, professionalism, and exceptional leadership throughout a distinguished career.

“The Nigerian Navy regrets to announce the passing of Rear Admiral Musa Bello Katagum, whose invaluable contributions were instrumental to the operational successes of the Navy in recent times,” the statement read. “His career was marked by exceptional commitment to duty, strategic insight, and unwavering loyalty to the mission of the Nigerian Navy.”

Rear Admiral Katagum held several key positions during his service, including Chief of Naval Intelligence and other strategic roles at Defence Headquarters, where he played a critical role in shaping maritime security policies and enhancing intelligence operations. As Chief of Operations, he oversaw crucial naval activities, including safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial waters, coordinating anti-piracy missions, and mentoring junior officers.
