Nigerian woman Abayomi Whint becomes judge in New York
A Nigerian-American legal professional, Abayomi Whint, has officially taken the oath of office as a judge for the Kings County Civil Court in New York.
The announcement was shared on her Instagram page on January 23, 2025, with a video captioned, “Welcome to the bench, Your Honor!”
Whint was among eight candidates elected as judges in Brooklyn during the November 2024 elections after being nominated by Brooklyn district leaders. Her swearing-in ceremony took place at Brooklyn Law School, where she was joined by family and friends, many of whom wore green and white in celebration.
During the ceremony, she took an oath, pledging, “…to discharge the duties of the office of judge for the Kings County New York Civil Court, according to the best of my ability. So help me God.”

With more than 20 years of experience in the public sector, Whint has built a career as a litigator, certified mediator, and arbitrator, with a focus on conflict resolution.
Beyond her legal practice, she has been actively involved in leadership development, inclusivity initiatives, team-building efforts, and restorative justice. As a Restorative Circle Keeper, she has played a key role in fostering fair and equitable dispute resolution.
In recognition of her achievement, Nigerian Consul General Ambassador Abubakar Jidda and his wife hosted a banquet in her honor at the Nigerian Embassy in New York.
