Nigerian Woman Laments Costly Igbo Marriage Traditions
A Nigerian woman has ignited widespread debate on social media after criticising what she described as costly Igbo marriage traditions, arguing that they are making it increasingly difficult for young women to settle down.
In an emotional outburst shared online, the woman lamented the long list of financial demands imposed on intending husbands by extended family members she said she barely knows. She questioned why individuals who have never played any role in her upbringing or wellbeing suddenly insist on being financially compensated simply because she plans to get married.
According to her, relatives commonly referred to as umunna, umuada, and other family groups are demanding that all traditional marriage rites and payments be fully settled before the marriage can proceed.

She described the situation as overwhelming and unfair, noting that many of those making the demands have never supported her in any way throughout her life.
While acknowledging the importance of Igbo cultural traditions, the woman argued that the excessive monetisation of marriage customs has turned them into tools of pressure, discouraging marriage and placing unnecessary strain on couples.
Her comments have since triggered mixed reactions online, with some users agreeing that rising costs and extended family demands are hurting marriage prospects, while others defended the traditions as an essential part of Igbo cultural heritage.
