Nnamdi Kanu Rejects Life Sentence, Vows to Challenge Court Ruling
Abuja — Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has rejected the life imprisonment sentence handed down by the Federal High Court, Abuja, his legal consultant, Alloy Ejimakor, confirmed shortly after Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Thursday.
Kanu was convicted on seven terrorism-related counts, including incitement, issuing sit-at-home orders, and directing attacks against police and military personnel. Prosecutors, led by Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, had sought the death penalty, citing the severity of his actions. The court, however, opted for life imprisonment, stating the need to temper justice with mercy.

Ejimakor said Kanu views the ruling as illegitimate and plans to appeal the verdict in higher courts, maintaining that the trial lacked constitutional jurisdiction. The IPOB leader has consistently condemned his trial as unlawful, referencing his controversial extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021.
Legal analysts note that the case has raised questions about due process, judicial independence, and the rights of defendants in high-profile terrorism trials. Kanu’s conviction and rejection of the sentence have also intensified political tensions in southeastern Nigeria and drawn attention from international human rights observers.
The life sentence marks a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing legal battle against IPOB and separatist agitation, but Kanu’s planned appeal indicates that the matter may continue to stir public debate and legal scrutiny.
