Nnamdi Kanu sues NMA, 10 doctors for N550m over alleged fake medical report

Nnamdi Kanu sues NMA, 10 doctors for N550m over alleged fake medical report

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has instituted a N550 million lawsuit against the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and 10 medical doctors over an alleged falsified medical report submitted to the court.

One of Kanu’s lawyers, Maxwell Opara, confirmed the development in a video posted on his Facebook page on Friday, stating that the suit was filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja.

“This is FCT High Court, Abuja. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has filed a N550 million suit against the Nigerian Medical Association and the 10 medical doctors that conspired and issued a fake medical report against him,” Opara said.

The legal action follows an earlier allegation raised in October 2025, when Kanu’s defence team accused the NMA of issuing a medical report without carrying out the examination ordered by the court.

Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, said the document tendered in court was dated October 13—weeks after the court gave its directive—leaving the defence with no adequate opportunity to respond.

“That medical report we were served in open court today was dated October 13. This obviously means the defence has no ample opportunity to react to it. It was more of an ambush,” he said.

Ejimakor further stated that despite the court’s directive that Kanu be examined by the NMA, no such assessment was conducted. Instead, he claimed the association relied on “informal meetings” with Kanu during a visit to the Department of State Services (DSS) on September 18.

“That order was never obeyed. They never examined him. That report was based on some informal meetings they held with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu… before the court entered an order on September 26,” he said.

Opara also noted that the disputed report had significant implications for Kanu’s ongoing trial, alleging that it influenced the court’s refusal to grant his client bail.

“The court ordered that they should examine Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, but they never did that. They went and wrote what they called a medical report, and it was that report that made the court refuse his bail,” he said.

He revealed that the legal team had previously written to the NMA and the implicated doctors seeking clarification on the contentious report but received no response, prompting the latest legal action.

The lawsuit marks a fresh twist in the prolonged legal battle surrounding Kanu, who has remained in DSS custody since June 2021 after his controversial return to Nigeria. He is currently facing charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony.
