NNPP attacks Ganduje over comment on one-party system

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has strongly condemned recent remarks by former Kano State Governor and APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, advocating a one-party system in Nigeria, describing it as a threat to the nation’s democracy.

Speaking in Kano, NNPP State Chairman, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, said Ganduje’s comments reflect “a clear disregard for democratic principles” and show an alarming lack of commitment to political diversity and inclusion.

His words: “I was not surprised by Ganduje’s thoughts on a one-party system, because it shows a lack of commitment to democratic ideals.

“A true democrat believes in participation, diversity of opinion, and the value of opposition.”

Dungurawa stated that democracy thrives on multiple voices and opposition parties, warning that dismissing other political actors undermines the legitimacy of the entire democratic process.

“When someone in a position of power disregards other parties or voices, it raises serious concerns. Being in another party doesn’t make one irrelevant—it enriches democratic discourse,” he added.

Citing global democratic models like the United Kingdom and the United States, the NNPP leader noted that no developed nation operates under a one-party system and that such an idea is contrary to the spirit of inclusive governance.

Dungurawa called on Ganduje to withdraw the statement to avoid deepening political tensions and alienating millions of Nigerians who do not subscribe to the ruling party.

He said: “Leadership requires respect for the fact that power ultimately comes from the people. One day, someone else will hold the positions we do today. That’s the essence of democracy.

“I sincerely urge him to withdraw the statement, as I believe most Nigerians are uncomfortable with such remarks.”
