The National Union of Petroleum and Gas workers (NUPENG) has debunked the a report that it plans to join the nationwide protest against police brutality, prejudicial killings and other forms of misconduct.
It said there was no iota of truth in the report the union planned to shut down fuel stations across the country and join the protests.
A statement by the union on Saturday titled, EndSARS: NO ORGAN OF NUPENG ORDERED SHUTTING DOWN OF FUEL STATIONS OR OIL INSTALLATIONS, showed the position.
The earlier report had asked people to stock up fuel in anticipation of the rumoured shutdown of fuel stations said to start next Monday.
The NUPENG’s statement denying the report was signed by comrade Williams Akporeha eniredonana and Olawale Afolabi, its national president and secretary general, respectively.
It stated, ”NUPENG stands with Nigerian youths against police brutality and call for immediate and far-reaching police reforms as our members are as well victims of police brutality and abuses through extortion, detention, harassment and intimidation nationwide.
”Meanwhile, no organ of our union has ordered shutdown of fuel stations or oil installations.
”We sincerely empathise with all victims of police brutality including our members across the country and we peacefully join all well meaning Nigerians to say police brutality must stop.”
